]]>Scare Off Intruders and Burglars
Having a surveillance camera in place can be a deterrent for intruders and burglars. Some of the intruders are bold enough to attempt to enter the house while you are around while others loiter around and wait for you to leave. Thus, having a security camera will possibly keep intruders away from your home. If the thieves are bold enough to break into the house anyway, the surveillance cameras can assist the law enforcement in recognizing the burglars and finding them.
Know What Happens When You Are Not Around
Anything can happen whenever you leave your house, and you may not know the cause. A surveillance camera allows you to know what happens when you aren’t around via alarm sounds. In case someone is trying to enter your house, the camera is able to capture the suspicious activities. Besides, it is also a way to check on your landscapers and housekeepers when you are not around. With the cameras, you can ensure they are acting right and performing the work they are hired to do.
Monitor Your Kids
A surveillance camera can also be the decisive baby monitor. You can watch your kid from any room and know whether the baby needs your attention. As the kids get older, you can check whether they are accessing the off-limit areas such as the cleaning supply closet. Also, you can know what time the kids got home from school while you are far away. The surveillance camera can also be used as a nanny camera for those who have a babysitter when they are at work.
Insurance Benefits
After a robbery, you are needed to make an insurance claim due to theft or vandalism. This is where surveillance security cameras come into play. With the camera footage, you can just document the incident and authenticate the insurance claim. In addition, a security system can generally lead to discounts of up to 20 % on home security.
Apart from preventing crimes, a surveillance security system can also be an excellent way to catch bad behaviors. Partners cheating on one another, nannies mistreating the kids, as well as children performing things they shouldn’t be performing. You may not only fall victim to strangers, but most of the time you may fall victim to people you trust. Thus, you may need a surveillance security system to protect you from the unforeseen.

]]>The recent hacks into Gawker and Sony and countless other sites have a lot to teach us about Internet security. One of those lessons is that users often, and to their own detriment, reuse passwords – a big password security faux pas.
Whether you use Jabbakam for home surveillance, baby monitoring or in a neighbourhood watch scheme, maintaining a good online security hygiene is tantamount to securing your data. One way to create a more secure online environment is to use more complex passwords. An increasing number of experts are urging internet users to increase their password length from 6 up to at least 10 characters.
Jabbakam advises that you:
Do create a password that is at least 10 characters long and of a random nature. This can be done by using a combination of captial and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Dictionary words should not be included in this password.
Do not use your Jabbakam password on any other site or for any other account.
Do install a reputable anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-spam program on all of your computers and devices — including your mobile phone.
Do not click on links from untrusted sources whether in emails or on websites.
Do discuss password security with your network and camera contacts in your network forums.
Do not login to your Jabbakam account from an untrusted computer such as in an internet cafe — where spyware lurks waiting to capture your passwords with keyloggers.
There is some great advice online about password security. Have a look at what these bloggers are saying about it:

]]>As the world has changed and peoples live take them far away from home and their families there is growing need for IP camera technology and for IP camera online network management systems.
As with nanny cams there is much discussion about whether or not it is ethical to install IP cameras to look after aging parents or keep an eye on their caretakers in order to prevent elder abuse.
We here at Jabbakam think about these issues too.
Though technology can and has surely been used to abuse and cause harm it has also done a great deal of good and has many positive applications.
As with any tool, technology can be used for good or evil and it is up to a society or a community to negotiate the line between these two extremes. It is only in communities that we can start to address the question of maximizing the benefits of technologies like Jabbakam and minimizing the potential abuses.
Surely the benefit of being able to see from a world away if the people who you’ve paid to care for your aging parents are in fact doing that outweighs the potential abuses of the technology. Or does it? There is ample room for debate. How can we keep this technology from being perverted or corrupted?

]]>What would happen next?
On the one hand, you would feel a lot less vulnerable. You could see your way down stairs, without cracking your head on the low hanging beams or twisting your ankle as you tumble to the bottom. You’d be less reliant on people. There are no words to describe the wonder of the gift of vision.
On the one hand, your new empowerment might offend some people. They could be jealous of your new independence. They might begrudge your happiness. They might even find it threatening. Of course, nobody would want to admit to such selfish insecurities. So instead, they might accuse you, with your 20/20 vision, of creating an Orwellian nightmare.
That’s a phrase that always goes over well with the conspiracy theorists. Never mind that, when you were partially sighted, you relied on someone else with perfect vision making your decisions for you. The crucial point, the aspect that really seems to upset people, is that you now have the power to make your own decisions. You’ve been given better information (in the form on vision) and a lot of people find that quite threatening.
It’s the same with #CMTV (community monitored TV). Many people find a nameless fear about giving other members of the community more power. In some ways, these fears are understandable, as power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. As the unfolding News International/Scotland yard corruption scandal reminds us.
Putting CCTV in the hands of a select, self appointed, unregulated group of unqualified people is indeed dangerous. That is absolute power and it is indeed absolutely corrupting. But if you neutralise the power of CCTV, by giving everyone perfect vision, then that is democracy in action.
If everyone enjoys the benefit of surveillance, that power can never be abused.
To complain about giving individual members of the community more power is like calling Granny’s cataract operation an ‘Orwellian nightmare’.

]]>The RestFUL API will allow you to build applications using, and extending the Jabbakam platform. Sign up for an API key, read the docs and start to build your own app now.
The Jabbakam Developers’ site should be the first port of call when developing your Jabbakam app, however, we are also on the wider web:
We still have lots to do (such as finishing off all the docs), but we hope that developers out there will find this site useful and we look forward to see to seeing lots of Jabbakam apps integrating with Jabbakam services in the future.
